Juno is a 62ft trad style narrowboat powered by a sought after Kelvin vintage engine. The vessel has a modern layout and high-end off-grid systems, which make it an exceptionally comfortable liveaboard that blends contemporary elements with classic charm.
The vessel was made by highly respected Colecraft Engineering in 1994, professionally fitted out to a high standard by Narrowcraft with all the extras and attention to detail that both companies are renown for and has been maintained in pristine conditions. This boat was originally a bespoke construction for its first owner who was a systems engineer, which is reflected in the high-end specifications of its systems design. This makes the boat a fully energy independent off-grid home that marries the comforts of dry land with the freedom of a constant cruising lifestyle. Considering the possibility that some degree of social distancing may become part of the 'new normal', and that during a lock-down scenario liveaboards are allowed to move for essential resupplying (e.g. fresh water), this boat will enable you and your family to work from home safely in remote areas of outstanding natural beauty thanks to its high-end off-grid systems design.
The vessel glided through its latest full survey in April 2018 (hull and systems survey - available for review), showing outstandingly low corrosion levels and extremely robust liveaboard systems, with minor recommended work addressed at the docking. One of the advantages of a well maintained pre-2000s Colecraft hull like this one (plating specification: high grade BS steel 10/6/4), is that they tend to rust less than their current lower grade equivalents. In September 2019 the hull was blacked sides and bottom (International Intertuf paint system) with an oil proof undercoat along the waterline (International Danboline paint system) to protect the hull in case of oil/diesel spills in the waterways. 8 new anodes were fitted by welding, 4 on the sides and 4 on the bottom, to allow navigation of even the narrowest canals in the UK (e.g. Grand Union Canal Northampton Arm). In September 2019 the vessel was also repainted inside and outside (International Toplac paint system). BSS Certificate valid until January 2022. Extensive service history available.
The boat is propelled by a fully rebuilt and beautifully maintained 3-cylinder Kelvin J3 vintage marine diesel engine made in Glasgow in 1946, housed in its own engine room. The engine is extremely reliable and fitted with electric thermostart, a brand new Optima Red Top 815A starter battery (2019) and it starts at the touch of a button. The Kelvin J3 has a harmonic slow revving sound and it is cooled by a skin tank system which circulates glycol and maintains it corrosion free. It comes with a specialist engine survey (2019), original manuals, original magneto and complete petrol hand-start system ready to be reinstated, extensive maintenance records and it is a member of the Kelvin Engine Owners Group which gives access to knowledge and technical support from seasoned experts. This is a highly desirable engine, that together with the high quality construction of the hull make Juno a great investment that will retain its resale value over the years.
In 2019 its interiors have been redesigned and furnished by a London-based design and engineering firm to have a large open-plan kitchen and a very bright living space that is perfect for working from home as well as for hosting. The galley is fitted with a full size fan oven, a 4-burner Whirlpool hob, solid iroko hardwood worktops, bespoke kitchen units, a brand new high efficiency 12V Shoreline RK113 fridge freezer (2019) and a brand new high efficiency 4kg 1000rpm Candy Aquamatic Tempo washing machine (2019). The bathroom, upgraded with an odourless Airhead composting toilet and fan ventilator, features vintage chrome plated brass fittings, a duck egg blue Edwardian roll top cast iron bath with shower over and a basin vanity unit lit by a custom-made light-fitting. All interior lighting is high efficiency 12V warm white LED. Lots of storage space throughout.
Central heating is supplied by a Webasto system feeding 4 radiators. The system has a programmable timer and automatically keeps the boat warm. All cabins are insulated with high efficiency insulation for a condensation free environment that is warm in winter and cool in summer. There is a charming Kabola Old Dutch diesel stove in the saloon, which lights up in seconds, burning clean and producing no ashes with a flame view. Hot water is automatically supplied by a calorifier, heated three ways by the Webasto, the engine and an electric immersion heater.
The electric system is designed to be easy to use and operated with a couple of main switches. Its technical specifications include a high efficiency 750W photovoltaic panel array (3 x 250w) with a high-end 60A Outback MPPT controller, which regularly reaches maximum output during summer. 220V mains are provided by a 2.1KW Pure Sine Wave Sterling Combi inverter/charger which is suitable for powering delicate electronics such as laptops. Juno has a massive 835ah deep cycle traction main battery bank (6 x 2V) that is capable of powering all systems (fridge-freezer included) for over a week in the worst shaded winter conditions where solar energy is not available. The bank is in pristine conditions with over 10 years of operating life left in it and it is fitted with a programmable Victron Charge Monitor that shows percentage of charge. In case of mooring in shaded locations in winter, the battery bank can be charged about once a week by either running the Kelvin engine which is fitted with a high-output 215A alternator, or by running the brand new 2KW Pramac 2000i LPG generator (2020) powered by a high efficiency Yamaha MZ80 engine fitted with an external exhaust outlet. In case of mooring in marinas, the system is fitted with a metered 240V landline as well as a Sterling Galvanic Isolator.
Juno has a headroom of 6'6'', 4 berths with 1 fixed double and 2 single bunks in the back cabin. It comes with a beautiful engineered oak floor and bespoke stable doors to the bow well deck. The vessel has a steel superstructure with 10 polished brass portholes, 4 hopper top windows secured with polished brass bars, a bespoke solid iroko classic skylight in the master bedroom and three desirable side opening hatches, two in the engine room and one in the open plan living space. Thanks to its clever fabrication and locking systems the vessel is very secure. Thanks to its length, beam size and a powerful engine that makes the boat very manoeuvrable, the vessel is able to double moor in the most popular areas where wide beams struggle to find moorings. All qualities that make the vessel perfect for both city living as well as for exploring all the beautiful narrow canals and tidal rivers around the UK. Juno is solid fuel free, which allows her to moor up during winter in smoke control areas such as London for many years to come.
