Meet Gypsy:
Gypsy is a fully equipped, capable blue-water offshore cruiser, ready to sail anywhere in the world. Her long keel and transom-hung rudder give her exceptional handling in rough seas. With her power set forward, she cuts through waves with ease and confidence.
Gypsy is a 35ft Freedom Cat Ketch, the last one ever built (1990). Her lightweight yet incredibly strong carbon-fibre unstayed masts allow for a unique hull design with a shallow draft of just 1.3m.
When I first discovered she had no standing rigging, I felt an immediate sense of relief—and curiosity. Those familiar with Freedoms know how well they sail, especially downwind. On a dead run, you can simply set one sail out each side and ride the trade winds around the world—the very purpose these yachts were designed for.
Easy Single-Handed Sailing:
Gypsy was designed for easy single-handed sailing—something I do often. With three reefs in each sail and all lines running back to the cockpit, there’s no need to go on deck in heavy weather. Everything can be handled from the cockpit.
Tacking is effortless—just turn the wheel and watch as the sails gently swing across to your new course. Safe, simple, and efficient.
Built to Last:
Gypsy was the final Freedom Cat Ketch built in Penryn, Cornwall (1990)—from the days when boats were made by true craftsmen, not accountants. Her solid GRP construction and strong build are a testament to designer Gary Hoyt.
As one of her old surveys put it:
“It’s nice to see a boat that was built by boat builders, and not accountants.”
What Makes Gypsy Stand Out:
I’ve put a lot of time and effort into converting Gypsy into a capable ocean-going cruiser, proven over 6,000 miles from the UK across the Atlantic to the Caribbean.
One of the biggest upgrades is the custom stainless-steel solar frame with 350W of solar—installed two years ago. It kept the autopilot running 24/7, the fridge cold, and all navigation gear powered across both the Bay of Biscay (430 nm in 3 days) and the Atlantic crossing (Cape Verde to Martinique in 16 days).
The solar system even powers my electric scooter for daily use, and there’s ample power to charge an electric outboard if needed.
Highlights:
Performance: Fast, strong, and stable. I’ve clocked 9.7 knots on a dead run and 10.5 knots surfing the Atlantic. She comfortably holds 8 knots before needing a reef.
No Standing Rigging: No rigging to replace or worry about (a £15k saving every 10 years!). Freedoms are famously reliable—one was even rolled in sea trials without mast damage.
Spacious Interior: Feels more like a 40-footer below deck, with a comfortable aft cabin for guests or crew.
Solar Power: 350W of Victron-controlled solar—unique for a Freedom. The frame could easily be adapted to lift the tender.
Condition: As the last and youngest Freedom Cat Ketch ever built, she’s in outstanding condition, lovingly maintained by her previous long-term owner.
Upwind Ability: Despite myths, Gypsy sails beautifully to windward—once you’ve tried it, you’ll be amazed more boats aren’t designed this way!
Reason for Sale:
Sadly, I recently lost my pup, who had sailed everywhere with me aboard Gypsy. It was sudden and heartbreaking. I now feel ready to return home to the UK and close this chapter.
I’m looking for a quick, stress-free sale, hence the price.
Gypsy is in a dream location just before the start of the Caribbean high season.
First come, first served – and I’m confident the first to see will buy.
If you’d like more info, photos, videos, or to have a chat, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Best wishes and kind regards,
Jimmy
